Make group pool Flickr member “tv” posted a couple http://www.flickr.com/photos/tv/6694831/in/pool-make/”>photos of a the $11 Mattel JuiceBox modified in to a photo frame. He says “I’m working on an LCD frame hacked out of a Mattel JuiceBox ($11 at Wal-mart). The ‘Box runs uclinux and accepts MMC cards”. Wow, this might be the way we can all have low-cost photo frames.

Now to make it go fetch photos or accept incoming deliveries (like what Ceiva’s frame does) and I’ll be building one.

Seems like the linux part makes it possible: Ceiva’s frames phone home for their pictures, but I think something that connects directly to the Internets would even cooler.

A quick check of walmart.com shows that this “$11″ JuiceBox costs $49. Still less than other lcd pcture frames but not quite as cheap as stated.

Hi! “tv” here. (And I’m a she.) I don’t hook the frame up to the Interweb, I just use some cheapy Canon 8 MB cards to dump images on it. The pics make it look really blue, it actually looks good in real life. I really did get them at Wal-mart for $11 at the end of February. They also had the MP3 / MMC carts for $15. Ebay seems to have them in the $20 – $30 range.

Version 2.0 is in the works, I’ll “how-to” soon!

najnad, if your laptop screen has an LVDS connector, you should be able to hook it to a, say, mini-itx motherboard with an LVDS connector.

I recently shredded my dead Powerbook and set its parts aside for a 15.2″ picture frame project, and it has an LVDS connector.

Ideally it should have 4gb storage from a sdd card with a long battery life or the option to turn the backlight off.

A lcd displays don’t consume much power this could extend the battery life.

Ebook readers like the amazon kindle and sony ereader cost as much as a laptop at present.what a rip off.I mean $250 to $400 for a ebookreader.
I don’t want to pay that much on principle.

Even a mini netbook is unsuitable for ebook reading due to the short battery life.
A low power low cost photoframe would be ideal.

I am surprised that no one has done this hack.The focus seems to be turning photo frame into video displays for which they are not really designed due to their poor frame rate.

They would are more suited to be ebook readers.

Anyone up for this challenge?
