DIY Margarita Maker

marg.jpgCarlo wrote in and said “Went to a bachelor party at a lake house Friday night. One of the guys brought a margarita that was made out of a gatorade cooler and a garbage disposal”. I’m curious how well this works. Seems like an interesting way to make a lot of margaritas. View image.

I actually made one of these. Didn’t take too long and the high cost item was the disposal. Works great, with the following trial and error guidance:

Do NOT add the ice first, or you will freeze the whole system up.

Mix your margarita (or pina colada, or daiquiri, or slushie) liquid ingredients first, ommitting most of the water. Gradually add ice as it mixes until you get the right consistency. Don’t over blend as the ice will melt more quickly that way, which is bad.

When I made mine I used PVE instead of the bathtub spigot, which actually looks pretty cool. I did use a clear piece of lexan plastic (about a 1/4 inch thick) on the front which enabled people to look inside at he disposal. I also added a switch plate on the side and a wiring junction box so that I had an on/off switch more readily accessible.

Guys love it; girls w/ a sense of humor tolerate it; wives can’t stand it…especially if you trash the kitchen because some idiot takes the lid off while it’s blending at high RPM…

    • hello, I just built one of these machines with the igloo cooler and garbage disposal. I need help getting the right mix. I hate to start wasting lots of booze or have my buddys over and not have the right mix. Any help with detailed maybe even step by step directions might help this dummy i’ve become. Pointers for margaritas or kid slushies? Thanks… Lee
