Standard PC components mounted to a $20 rack-mount shelf. This is a project from about 3 years ago, when anything “Rackmount” was even more expensive than it is today (not that Rack PC’s are all that cheap now…). With a system board that has on-board Ethernet, and 1U power supply from ebay, this could easily be a $20 or $50 1U setup as well. Thanks Brian! Link.

On the other end of the spectrum, does anyone know where one can find premade project boxes that can be mounted in 3.5″ and 5.25″ slots of standard desktop boxen?
The only alternative I can think of is to get something custom-made via http://www.emachineshop.com/. That’s not a bad alternative, just not as cheap as something mass-produced; I’d rather focus on the front panel by them.
Cool! Just noticed the CEO has a blog.
One idea that comes to mind is using the casing from an old CD-ROM. Old 16x CD-ROM’s can be had for free often times, or maybe you’d have to pay as much as $5
Thanks, BrK! Hadn’t thought of that. Same goes for floppy drives (3.5″ and 5.25″).
