Rocketboom has my favorite DIY car film of all time- C’etait un Rendez-vous by Claude Lelouch. In 1976 Claude mounted a 35mm camera and did a high speed drive through Paris. It’s 8 minutes, one take, it’s amazing. There’s a lot of speculation about how it was actually done, if he really drove and if he was really arrested at the premiere. Enjoy- Link.

Not sure why, but it’s edited. The first 45-50s or so is clearly not Rendezvous (or even close to the same caliber of driving for that matter), and the rest is truncated since the whole thing comes in at under 3mins and there’s lots missing.

I suspect bits have been colorized too, although the tape I’ve seen has probably been duplicated my times, and perhaps isn’t as faithful to the original as it should be.

Whatever the case, the original is outstanding. And even under three mins of the soundtrack is fun to hear.

The original is available on DVD. I got mine from a company in England, but I believe the DVDs are available in the US now. A web search should turn up a few shops. The DVD was made from the original film masters, and includes some information (text only) about the legend surrounding the film.

And yes, the original is outstanding.
