It’s not clear from the post or the pics what the point of this mod is. Anyone care to elaborate? Did he remove the spring so the middle button doesn’t “click”?

The point is to get rid of the annoying “click” of the scroll wheel, not the wheel button.
I’ve been using one of these for years and have never liked the detents on the wheel. Scolling down was relatively smooth and quiet, up was harsh and noisey. Now it’s silky smooth and noiseless.
