The shape of the shade really reminds me of something I read in the Mathematical Recreations column of Scientific American a few years ago. I think it was about how a compressed cylinder can fail in tesselating patterns and origami. I think it’s the Feb 1999 issue, but it’s not free online and I don’t have a paper copy, so I’m not sure.

I just made one of these out of parchment paper, which worked OK but is a little flimsy. I’ve added a wire ring at the top and bottom for added stability.

Next step: add some LEDs and a switch.

Great site! I was at a downtown art,music,craft show and found a great DIY lamp idea. It looks like a cross between a lamp and a lampshade. The lamp is really part of the lampshade. The creative part for DIY is supplied as a large plastic color transparency. This is fastened to the lamp with 4 small chrome plated acorn nuts. The large transparency or screen comes with the lamp. It can be a graphic or photo of just about anything. You can have a photo of a pet, friend, vacation spot, favorite hobby or whatever. The nice thing is that you aren’t stuck with the same image. All you do is remove a few screws and add the new screen. The name of the lamp sounds like the old retro lavalamps but is really “luvulamp”. They were out of stock at the time, or I would have bought a few. I saw one of them that was used as reading light. I something similar at Target, but the screen wasa not interchangeable.
