For folks interested in pen turning, I recommend
    these two videos.

  2. I just received my most recent catalog from Lee Valley Tools and they featured their make-your-own pen materials on the cover. Their catalog is amazing for all types of woodworking tools. Be sure to check out their pen blanks from all sorts of woods and other materials.

I suggest requesting a catalog, but here is their website:

I have gotten all my supplies from Penn State Industries. Rockler has some too. The lathe was cheap, less than $400. There are some specialized tools like the pen mandrel and the pen assembly press. Penn State has a video on how to do it also, I think they sent it for free when I bought the lathe. It provided a pretty good overview on the process. My students also did a project on designing the parts of the pen in ProDesktop CAD. When they had designed all the parts assemblies and printed the drawings, I gave them the parts for the pen.
