Here’s another old Maker book – “The Boy Mechanic” published by Popular Mechanics, last printed in 1952. Offered thru Project Gutenberg, 700 Things for Boys to Do. First published in 1913, the PDF version is richly illustrated. You can download it from project Gutenberg here – Thanks Justin!

  1. Looks like a subset of this book is going to be reprinted! Check it out:

  2. I can’t believe this. I was just looking at a newer version of this book (from the 40s or 50s) on my parent’s bookshelf.

This book series is available from Lee Valley Tools. They also have reprints of the Popular Mechanic’s shop tips in volumes from 1905 – 1930 as well a number of other “vintage” reprints. From reading these, it’s obvious that a country drive was an mechanical adventure and not just a quick jaunt. The reprints are very good quality (like new printing, not copied), and fairly inexpensive. Lee Valley also has a great assortment of mostly woodworking-related tools and hardware of very good quality and fair prices.

For what it is worth, Dover also publishes a reprint of some/all of this under the title The Boy Mechanic: Best Projects from the Classic Popular Mechanics Series.

  6. Wow… A book from 1913. I love project Gutenberg!
I may try to find the original for my garage :)
