While it is somewhat more expensive ($49) the “Chrome Commercial Folding Garment Rack” from Target is an excellent framework for projection screens. It folds up well, has good wheels and is built as sturdily as a shopping cart. Using a pair of curtain rods and a sheet of blackout cloth I have been able to make a 72″ wide projection screen.
The one issue I would be interested in is the side tensioning which has proven to be the most challenging issue involved.

It’s worth pointing out that Jeff’s solution is about $50, not the $16 noted on Digg. The PVC frame is $16, with an additional investment in fabric (the screen) with a total cost approaching $50. Still that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a very inventive approach to a traditionally expensive problem.
