Chuck writes “I have a 17″ laptop. Only a few bags are available and only one backpack: the Targus 17″ XL Notebook Bag. Sadly, its design makes the outermost panel almost unusable unless you carry water bottles with it. They add straps on other models, but not the 17″. I added some snaps, and it made the bag a lot more usable. I thougth I’d share. There are bound to be a few Makers out there with a larger laptop and this same problem!”Link.

I have the version for a 17″ PowerBook G4. Works great and very sturdy. Not that heavy. I travel all over the US/Canada w/it. Its held up great and my mac is still in excellent condition.

The hard plastic exterior is the best part. I usually only cary the laptop, power supply, mouse, assorted cables and papers inside. You might be able to fit more “stuff” in it if you wanted.

I really wish they just made a 17″ version of the 15″ Matrix. It’s a great bag, with all the problems fixed. One thing I didn’t mention is that the Matrix also has a utility pocket on each side whereas the XL has one utility pocket — great for a digicam — and another water bottle holder on the other. They must think we’re all dehydrated from carrying around heavy 17″ laptops…

I also received an email suggesting the Targus 16″ Sport Deluxe Notebook Backpack from a reader that said his 17″ fits in it fine. I’m going to check it out the next time I’m in the store, but my Sony A290 is honkin’ big.

I have a 17″ widescreen Inspiron MCE, it was tough to find a backpack for it as well. I ended up with a Swiss Army brand designed for 15″ and 15″ widescreen notebooks. After a bit of modification though, my 17″W slips in there nicely. Plus it’s incredibly well padded. The downside is it was around $90.

Ok, so I paid way too much, but here’s a link to mine.
