Luxeon 001
Do not look at LED MEGALIGHT with remaining eye… – “This is a homemade LED flashlight with a PVC body that is easily bright enough to blind you, and uses only one special LED (a Luxeon V). The light projected is a smooth, clear white illumination with no “rings” in the projected light like those cast by normal flashlights.”Link.

Get the 5W LED, an a Fraen collimator and holder to go with it from http://www.luxeonstar.com/. They even have constant current drivers so all you have to do is solder a couple wires.

I’ve used a Luxeon V on my homemade bike light. They are fantastic! I get over four hours of burntime from 8 AAs and they are bright enough for all but the fastest downhill sections. Take a look: http://www.outsider.plus.com/bikelights.html

Like the last guy said, a constant current driver only requires soldering a few wires. The added reliability and battery savings recoup the cost very quickly. Check out:

They will even solder the driver on for you:

(if you can’t solder 2 leads are you really a maker?)

nice write up, but for the same money you spent you can get a real flashlight with 1 or 3W LEDs off ebay..
