If you own a CD you can rip the songs to MP3s, it’s silly that you cannot “legally” do the same with your DVD collection you own and take your movies with you on devices you own, but don’t worry there are a couple super easy one click apps that can help out–

oh yay, more lawsuits… I really wouldn’t have as much a problem IF there was no need to make a backup. If there was a problem to send in your damaged disk and have it replaced at cost (and disk mfr and stamping is VERY cheap) – I’d be cool with that.

I feel that I am buying a license – a license to view content. I also feel that my method of content storage should be just that; my method (not someone else’s). Bah /rant.

When you pay for a DVD, you should be able to play it on whatever you want, PSP, iPod, Linux desktop, etc.

It’s incredibly stupid that it’s illegal and helps prove that the government is owned by companies, but it’s still illegal.

There is a company that rips DVD movies to brand new iPods and then sells the iPods *with* the DVDs. This all sounds like fair use, doesn’t it? Just yesterday they were sued by the MPAA for violating the DMCA by ripping the discs.

Slightly different request. Is there an easy way to rip just the soundtrack from a DVD to MP3? I’ve got a few music video DVDs that have tracks on them that are not on the associated CD. And I think this is going to become more common. I’d like to play the music everywhere I can play the CD’s music.

jbond – For Mac: I use 0Sex (that’s a zero in front) to rip the audio to ac3 files. It usually creates one file for each chapter (song). Then I convert the ac3 files to mp3 files using mAC3dec. Works like a charm and I’ve been using it to do exactly what you want for a couple of years now. Sorry I don’t know of a solution for Windows. Hope that helps.
