Like a lot of makers out there I spent a lot of time in Radio Shacks, or at least as much as I could, so it’s a pleasant surprise to see that the Sebastopol, CA Radio Shack has a MAKE display and our goods/kits/books/volumes on sale *with* projects on display. It would be wonderful if every store carried MAKE, one can dream! – Link.

Radio Shack was like a candy store for me when I was about 6 or 7 years old. My first real experience with electronics was a 160-in-1 kit and it is one of the reasons I pursued electrical engineering in college. I think I built every single project and went on to design my own circuits. Actually, I think Make should have a feature on these kits as I think they had a big impact on many young makers’ lives in the 80s and are available readily on ebay (I bought a new 160-in-1 for about $12.) “Kids these days” don’t have as easy access to these kits (Radio Shack no longer carries them afaik) but they are still sold at some hobby stores.
Anyone have any info on that guitar looking object in the photo? It looks to be made from PVC pipe…
It is a PVC-pipe guitar. We’ve got a DIY written by Tom Zimmerman on how to make it in Volume 09 of MAKE, pp. 115-119. Send us pictures or post them on the MAKE Flickr pool once you’ve built yours!
There’s a Make display at Weirdstuff Warehouse now, too.
How cool! Growing-up in the 70′s, I spent a lot of time at the local RadioShack. There were all kinds of kits and fun stuff to experiment back then.
When I began managing the Sebastopol RadioShack in January, one of the first things I did was to get in contact with the nice folks at MAKE: to find out how we could expand their presence in my store. We started out carrying just the magazine, but it wasn’t enough.. I wanted to fill an entire display case with MAKE: paraphernalia. Our customers’ response to it has been very positive. We’ve sold more than a dozen of the latest Fringe issue -and more soldering irons than ever.
A couple weeks ago, Tom Waites came into the store. He played the PVC guitar (liked it) and bought a copy of The Magazine.
=^) Ya, It’s my favorite part of the store.
too bad radio shack sucks these days. It used to be a great place to go in the early 80s
ryborg, I GUARANTEE that if you cam into my store -your faith would be restored.. that’s one in a row!
