Today, we had an event that seemed right up the Make Magazine alley — The Windy 500. This afternoon, 20 high school teams converged on the Museum of Science, Boston to race in the first-ever Windy 500, a highlight of the Lemelson-MIT Program’s four-day EurekaFest to encourage teens to embrace science, engineering, and innovation. 30-inch blade, high-powered fans spinning at 1725 revolutions per minute propelled students down race tracks in ‘sail cars’ their teams had just designed in less than two hours — all with surprise raw materials including duct tape and PVC pipes. In addition to The Windy 500 Cup, teams competed for the “Most Innovative Use of Duct Tape” and “Oh, No, I Can’t Believe It!” awards.
