I’ve been a magician for many years (going on 16 now) and I must say that tricks that require skill (instead of modified props) are much more impressive. Say coin tricks where anybody can give you a coin or anybody can give you a deck of cards. If you go to a friends house and he asks you to show you that trick and hands you a deck of cards then you’re screwed and you’ll have to go back to a trick that requires deck manipulation. (Look up Lennart Green) for a great card magician who doesn’t use props (or hardly any)
