So – how to create something that could be programmed to operate the FIOS cable box remote to turn the box on and select the right channel when the DVR is programmed to record?
Jason Striegel’s suggestion is to set up a Linux box sending infrared commands using LIRC at the specified times; use it to send commands to the DVR as well as the FIOS box. Let us know in the comments if you have any ideas of your own!










We use these at work. The nice thing about these is they have multiple outputs to control more than one device. Can interface with a comp via serial or network.
I would have a microcontroller (perhaps an arduino??) with a 4×4 keypad interfaced to it for channel/ time entry. Have a time keeping chip such as the DS1302 keep track of the time. When it is time to record the uC would output the correct IR codes to the cable box. This sounds like a really cool project!
