SLK Electronics has a piece on their site about breaking down a DeWalt 36V A123 high-power Li-ion batteries to make your own battery configurations. This (and several other related articles on the site) is gear towards electric model planes, but is obviously applicable to any application.

For anyone that hasn’t seen a high power pack explolde or flame-up because of a short circuit/improper charging/damage…
Please, wear eye protection, work away from flammables, have a proper chemical type fire extinguisher handy, have a steel can with a lit nearby to dump ‘mistakes’into.
Modern Ni-Cads, Li-Ion, and NMh batteries have tremendous energy storage capacities. Improper use WILL cause injury, damage, and fires, along with loss of eyebrows, dignity, pride, workbench tops, and permission from the wife to do projects on the kitchen table.
(steel can with LID) – typo caused by not enough coffee.
Agreed on the safety precautions. On a related note, since these packs use A123 cells, here’s some safety-related info on their site.
