This is freaking rad – a maker made a working Stargate (by working I mean it dials up a planet, lights up, etc – it doesn’t actually transport you anywhere, yet).

Talk about getting your hopes up and then dashed on the rocks like a baby seal! It is sweet though, even if I’ve only ever seen a few SG episodes.

You can just see the motor at the bottom. The small metal pulley spins whenever the main ring moves, so it looks like a stepper motor and a toothed belt drive. Maybe a stepper motor out of an old printer or floppy-disk drive? Oh, and lots of blue LEDs!

Ok, I have to also ring in a little disappointment in lacking a proper event horizon, Iris control, and chevron locking. Plus, you have to have the guy with the glasses count off each symbol entered, that’s what makes the whole thing run.

I like the spiral missing-light pattern to represent the horizon, it’s a simple yet unique showing. I wonder how well one of those tacky “animated waterfall” distorted backlighting pictures could be carved up for this?

For Mark 2, try one with the Iris closed, that gives a thump and flash every time a jaffa tries to barge on through. Incoming grease stain in gate room!
