Duncan Yo-Yos, gyroscopes and tetratops

@The NYC Toy fair 2008 Duncan Yo-Yos had a small but fun area, a full time Yo-Yoer on staff and their latest line up. I tend to like tops & gyroscopes, but they also had a new product line called “Tetratops” - these are multi-axis spinners and can be stacked (this was developed by the folks behind the Molecularium IMAX type film on the nano-scale).

Those gyroscopes look fantastic, but the Tetratops are several years old (2003 or sooner). Tetratops are one of the least interesting toys I’ve ever played with… Spinning and stacking them doesn’t hold your interest for nearly as long as you may think.
I love that they also come with trading cards, as if that’s a huge selling point. “Oh cool, I’ve got the tetrahedron card!” Okay, as I type it now, it sounds like it would be fun.

  2. If this stuff is of interest, go get a book by Don Coxeter.

I saw the original inventor of the Tetratops on television a few years ago. When he explained how he made them it was really quite simple (clear acrylic ball, and glue). I Re-Made a set for myself. Doc’s right… once you make one, and spin it around for about 5 minutes, the novelty is gone. They are cool to watch though for those 5 minutes :)
