Friday night at DEFCON the from the shadows crew gave MAKE the exclusive scoop on the Kegbot. A linux-based Keg system that tracks users, tallies calories and more. We interviewed one of the MAKERS as well as getting a lot of photos of the construction to completion. One the coolest projects I’ve seen so far at DEFCON was the kegbot, a linux based keg that dispenses beer as long as you have an iButton key. The system keeps track of who you are, how much you’re drinking and in team mode- where you rank. the Kegbot crew built and deployed a kegbot on site at DEFCON, we were lucky enough to get there and document the building of it!
To give you an idea of the stats and what type of information can be store, here’s a sample.

Kegbot invite and signage.

Hose and c02 being connected, they built this on site all in one day.

One of the sensors on the hose.

Soldering the board.

Custom board.

This is the original board used.

iButtons are used to identify the drinker.

Linux box.

Screen with commands.

Success, looks like it’s operational.

Some of the tools.

LCD readout enclosure.

Kegbot installer Mike at work.

The beer type.

Freezer status.

Each pour is displayed on the readout.

Team names as well as individuals can be displayed.

Key press, beer drink.

Team Kegbot.

Team MAKE (me) was doing pretty well, there were about 50 or so other people and I was in 5th for awhile.

The results are usually displayed on a server, the DEFCON ones will be on kegbot.org soon.

You’ve been Gadgetized.
Sweet project! Are there any detailed plans available for someone that is interested in building a system like this that already has a kegerator? Maybe a parts list, code used, how to, etc. Long live the Kegbot!
