Markayak took the matter of cenral air into his own hands -

DIY Central Air: Cold air output of the 2-ton wall unit is piped via duct tape and poly dropcloth to the nearest heat register. Furnace filter was replaced with a plywood panel (not pictured) to prevent backflow. Heating ductwork was used to distribute cool air to the bedrooms.

cool idea, but I bet the plastic bags make it noisy. That would probably irritate me moreso than the actual heat!

I don’t know about that other setup linked as “Related”, buf for mine the big AC unit itself was the noisiest part, the plastic duct actually muffled it a bit, and downstream in the bedrooms I could hardly hear a thing. However, condensation was an issue. Later, I added a couple plastic paint trays to catch the drips, and an inner-tube drain line to a plastic bottle.

I know someone who did this with a series of bags taped together and a fan in his basement. The air in the basement was much cooler than the rest of the house, so there was no need for an active cooling system.

Seems more intuitive to direct the output of the AC unit to a cold air intake and leverage the forced air fan to distribute.
