MAKE pal Amal Graafstra’s book RFID toys is shipping! The book covers how to build RFID enabled projects and solutions and touches briefly on what others are doing with RFID, including implantable RFID tags. Link to book – our previous interview, and as a special treat, Amal sent us some photos of his recent RFID projects! The RFID enabled USB keyboard (chapter 4) and the other pic is of an integrated RFID reader in an electronic safe (chapter 5). The keyboard project is designed to take a normal USB keyboard and add a USB RFID reader to it. When the project is complete, you can’t tell the difference between the RFID enabled keyboard and an unaltered USB keyboard. Both the keyboard and RFID reader function off the original USB keyboard cable. The keyboard project uses GINA replacement software for windows to let a user leverage RFID based authentication to log into their PC.

The RFID enabled safe project takes an electronic fire safe and adds RFID functionality to it. A user can use an RFID access card to gain entry to the safe, as well as the original pin-code option the safe was designed with.
