So, have you ever wanted to make a pedal powered trike that shoots flames? Me too! Luckily for us, the Members of the Department of Spontaneous Combustion documented their entire build. What really caught my eye were the wheels. They are amazing works of art by themselves.

My crew, Krank-Boom-Clank, have been busily building identical wheels for our 4-wheeled “Hennepin Crawler” slated for show-boating at The Great Handcar Regatta in Santa Rosa, CA, Sept. 28th, 2008.

We first saw and were inspired by the trike mentioned in this post at Burning Man 2007 and have since been in contact with one of the builders, Scotty C. He’s been extremely friendly and a great help!

Thanks for posting this! I added a few more images of wheels by the guys who showed me how to make them at the bottom of the page listed above. There are a bunch of ways to make these kind of wheels, so I thought I should post alternate ways ’cause everyone likes to work in different ways!

Can’t wait to see more fun big wheeled machines crawling around!

It was great to meet a couple of the Krank-Boom-Clank gang this last weekend at the 40th Kinetic Sculpture Race in Humboldt County… Thanks for making the trip up guys!!

Thanks again, Scotty C, for all of the great work and help to fellow builders!

We just finished our K-B-C site with plenty of shots of our contraptions and the events we’ve attended:

There are quite a few documentation photos at the bottom of the Gallery to show the building of our “Hennepin Crawler”:

We’re happy to answer questions via email should some builders need more info.
