Austin Event: Hot Sauce Festival

This Sunday, 2 of my favorite things come together: with DIY and hot sauce combined, I turn into Homer Simpson from that episode when he eats a hot pepper.

In addition to tasting home brewed hot sauce, there’s also great music throughout the day. You can enter your own sauce the morning of competition, and admission is just a suggested donation of food or cash to our local food bank:

Waterloo Park at 12th & Trinity

11am-5:30pm

FREE (Bring three nonperishable food items for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.)

[Free parking available in Capitol Visitors Parking Garage and Garage F.]

Food vendors will provide a wide array of foods. This year the following restaurants will be on hand serving up their specialty dishes: Buffalo Billiards, Curra’s, Matt’s El Rancho, Oaxacan Tamaleo, Opal Divine’s, and Sun Garden Shaved Ice. Chips for the tasting tent will be donated by H-E-B.

Proceeds from the daylong raffle to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.

This used to be a great event, but the City of Austin Health Inspectors decided to kill it this year.
As of very recently, all hot sauce how has to be made in a commercial kitchen if you want it to be sampled. You can still enter the contest without doing that, but 99% of the fun was trying other peoples salsa.

So make for the Maker spirit in the COA.

I tried all of the restaurant and commercial bottlers salsa’s.The only one that had an ok’ flavor was ana’s.These were the weakest,blandest salsa’s i have ever tasted.The only real hot sauces were just that,pepper sauces.They were just hot.no real excellent flavor.I wish we could have tried the individual salsa’s because i know they would have been better than the others.When people pay good money($20.00 per jar to enter)they expect the community to give a fair impartial vote.I will not enter this competition again if the public cannot vote on it.It was fun to taste the hot sauces.I now realize why people buy homemade gourmet salsa,s.There just better.Have a great day!
