I made a similar one last year, but I made a few mods.

First, if you can find a mason jar with a wide mouth, it allows you to hang some fly-paper inside the jar.

Attach the mason lid to the base and screw in the jar when you are done setting things up.

The fly-paper catches the flies, so you don’t have flies escaping all of the time when you want to get rid of them.

Yeah, this is nice if you want to make it obvious you have a fly problem. For the more discreet, take a disposable cup a fill with a mix of cider vinegar and water, add one drop of dish soap to break the surface tension. For some reason the flies go down to the surface to drink even if there are drops on the side. After about an hour most of your flies will be at the bottom of the liquid and you can toss the whole thing. For the eco-friendly who don’t mind cleaning dead flies, ummm just don’t confuse this with your coffee mug, seriously don’t.

We built one of the “cone on top of jar” variants. It worked, and trapped a number of flies. But we forgot about it for a few days, and the flies eventually figured out how to escape…
