One thing I might add: you might as well tap the holes while you have the treadmill flywheel bolted to a drill press. Simply replace the drill bit with an alignment pin (to locate the pip on the backside of the tap) and slowly advance the tap (with a wrench) as before. By carefully maintaining pressure on the tap with the drill press, you can guarantee that the tap will be concentric with the drilled hole, and you will be much less likely to strip your first threads or break your tap.
P.S. your pdf was great for the turbine part, but the electronics part was a little lack luster. At least include a schematic of the concepts to spark research for interested builders.

This is a potentially cool project but is based on infomercial style science. Voltage does not equal power. Your description of bridge rectifiers is only about 25% correct. Also, I’m no expert in battery chargers but I really think the battery charging implementation shown in your video is potentially dangerous. For people’s safety I hope you can get an expert to look at this and clean up your project.

Jim, we found that 6-8 minutes isn’t enough time to dive very deeply into complex subjects, but instead used the time to present the major concepts and a beginning to end build.
And, hey, don’t leave us hanging, let’s hear the other 75% of the bridge rectifier story!
This project is in use by the author of the original MAKE article, and he has not suffered any dangerous disaster, but again, we’re a community, so if anyone has tips on the charger implementation, let’s hear it.
