Can’t decide on a typeface for your next project? Why not choose them all, with Michael Flückiger and Nicolas Kunz’s Laika, the dynamic font generator. It’s a relatively straightforward concept, but could make for some cool visualizers. What if the text on your website ‘breathed’ with you, or melted when left in the sun? It could either be really cool, or more annoying than regular old blinking text. Personally, I’m picturing a weather display, where the word weather itself morphs in relation to outside conditions. Knuth’s metafont (which dates to 1977!) does this. Wikipedia says of the metafont typeface family “computer modern”:
The most unusual characteristic of Computer Modern, however, is the fact that it is a complete type family designed with the METAFONT system. The Computer Modern source files are governed by 62 distinct parameters, controlling the widths and heights of various elements, the presence of serifs or old-style numerals, whether dots such as the dot on the “i” are square or rounded, and the degree of “superness” in the bowls of lowercase letters such as “g” and “o”. Computer Modern is by no means the only METAFONT-designed typeface, but it is the most mature and widely used by far.
