MAKE | Arduino Skeleton – Look Mom, no PCB!

MAKE subscriber Kakehi spotted this unusual Arduino incarnation at a recent Make: Tokyo meeting – Kimio Kosaka’s Arduino skeleton, made from nothing but components, steel wire, solder, and loving care. The ~~board~~ design is based off of the Metaboard Arduino-(mostly)compatible, which implements USB compatibility in the chip’s firmware.

Hmmm â€¦ insulated standoffs anyone? Maybe a quick resin dip?

In the early 60′s missile modules were built in a similar manner, then encased in a solid block of epoxy resin, for shock resistance. The big difference: They didn’t solder, instead they SPOT WELDED each joint. You could see the “dents” where the wires crossed and were joined. (a coworker had most of a rejected unit as a paperweight – they would bandsaw the connector block off the rejects, so they were sure that they wouldn’t get flown)
