One fine morning, Jimmie Rogers woke up and decided to figure out how many Charlieplexed LEDs would fit on an Arduino shield. After five hours and some hardcore design and layout action, he determined that the answer is 126. It’s a pretty complex looking board, however he has excellent explanations of the design process and subsequent software development on his blog. The board is a work in progress, but it’s looking great so far!

  1. You can fit 380 LEDs on an Arduino shield using charlieplexing. The designer should have usedd SMT LEDs if his goal was maximum LEDs. Or he could have used a larger board and still had it mount as a shield.

Also, maybe make needs to do an article on making videos of your projects. That was truly horrible. Why is he holding and shaking the boards, especially when there’s a nice surface a few inches under them. Holding the camera in one hand and project in the other can be number 1 on your list of don’ts.

  2. Rookie mistake. Turn off the current row/col of LEDs before selecting the next one. Otherwise you get random dimly lit LEDs. Sorry for being pedantic.
