

British sculptor Tessa Farmer makes these amazing little vignettes featuring 1-cm-tall skeletal fairies made from “bits of organic material, such as roots, leaves, and dead insects” pitted against actual insects and other, larger taxidermied critters. When I was a kid there was a 5 foot round pit, the base for an old silo. Small animals often fell into it and we’d rescue them. But if you sifted through the rubble in the bottom you’d find tons of tiny old skeleton bones from unfortunate critters. I started collecting the bones to build and create bizzare skeletons of tiny dragons, dinosaurs and what not. But something in me alerted that I was starting down the same path as Ed Giene, so I opted for drawing such oddities on paper. I wonder what might have happened…
