If you’re participating in our awe-inspiring MAKE Robot Build contest, you should know that Steve Joiner and his sons Noah and Jamie have set the bar with their excellent coasterbot, HUL-10.

(You may remember we posted a super-cute video showing Noah describing the various components of the bot.)

Not only does HUL-10 do a great job of avoiding obstacles thanks to its twin IR sensors, I was really impressed with the homemade wheels Steve cooked up. He turned a CD spindle into a jig and cut a bunch of disks down, glued them together, and then wrapped them in rubber for traction. The stand-offs he made out of dice win mad style points too!

Competitors, you’d better bring your A-game because these Joiner boys don’t mess around.
