The latest issue of MAKE, Volume 22, contains an automated chicken coop door opener project, by Alan Graham (Portland, OR). My geek BFF, Jeri Ellsworth, sent me a link to another, clever remote-controlled coop opener, put together by her friend “Slinky.” It uses a $5 power drill as the door winch and a Seeduino as the controller. [Thanks, Jeri!]

I really like the operation of the latch mechanism – very neat. I bought a commercial Coop Door Opener soon after getting my chickens, but I do like the idea of being able to remotely control the door. Perhaps a remote Arduino controlled addon is in order !

For those without the luck of locating a drill on the cheap, there is a 6V AA version of a Skill-Twist screwdriver for about $12 out there. A lot of torque for odd mechanical/robotic projects for a nice price.
