My friends Lee and Robin of Farm Folly make homesteading look easy. I’ve been following their escapades ever since they moved out to Oregon two years ago to restore an old farmhouse and learn to live off their land. Their latest project has been to build an automatic chicken waterer, which consists of a large barrel for water collection, a sturdy stand, and a commercial water bowl. It’s a pretty simple design, but should be a huge time saver- no more dealing with dinky waterers that have to be replaced often.

I’m guessing that an outdoor structure built of untreated lumber is not going to hold up long. But nice carpentry on it!
I wanted to do something similar to this but I found chicken nipples instead. All I had to do was drill some holes into the bottom of a bucket, screw the nipples in and hang it up! The water now stays fresh and poop free all day long
5 of them cost about $10 and they can be found all over the place, just do a search for “chicken nipples”. I got from http://bafxpro.com/5-Pack-Chicken-Poultry-water-nipples-5.htm
Chicken nipples could be used in conjunction with a rain barrel thus eliminating the need for cleaning and filling. just drill holes in to 2″ pvc screw in the nipples and plumb accordingly.
