For those curious about the inner workings of kaiju beasties like Gamera (top) and Guiron…
The anatomical features of Gamera and his foes are detailed in a set of illustrations found in one volume of the Kaijū-Kaijin Daizenshū movie monster book series published by Keibunsha in 1972.

I have no idea why, but I loved Gamera as a child. Possibly due to his “disk of fire” flight mode, which was sort of animated IIRC.
And since monsters love children, I had to return the favor.
That’s my story and I’m stickin to it.
This seems an apropos time to point to one in a series of posters I made based on some illustrations I did for CRAFT magazine. http://www.etsy.com/listing/65743772/craft-poster-monster, http://www.flickr.com/photos/narwhalbot/5376393464/in/photostream/ It’s a depiction of Kaiju monster Sky Deviler from the live monster wrestling league Kaiju Big Battel.
