Ron from Milwaukee, WI, built this nicely executed computer case in a weekend at his friendly local hackerspace, Milwaukee Makerspace. I love how hackerspaces are so great for encouraging projects like this!

This is a semi-portable computer case, made with desktop components and 1/2″ oak plywood, that I hacked together in a weekend at Milwaukee Makerspace. Its main purpose was to try out some ideas that I’ll incorporate into a better design later. But I like the way it turned out.

I was seriously considering building something like this but then realized there is no good reason for me to not just use my laptop. I really like the aesthetics of this though. Maybe i could modify a design like this for workbench desktop in the future. Thanks for sharing.

  i really like the idea of a full PC that can be easily moved around the house…. or to friend’s house for a lan party. items such as this are only useful for people that need what it can do, or only have the parts that can make it. (for instance, me: i do not have a working (anymore) laptop, but i have enough parts sitting around for a second PC.)

it’s “portable,” but not “carry-able.” half-inch oak is not light by any means. you wouldn’t want to carry this around like a laptop.

I’m thinking about doing this with a screenless laptop I have. I want something portable to use with music projects. A standalone laptop is not great because there is no secure way to plug in guitars and other audio sources. I would add a metal panel covering part of the front for jacks, switches, etc.

Although the computers on The Best PC are not ultra portable, they sure do rock. When I used the site to build my first custom computer I didnt know what to expect, now I know its a great deal, and its easy too!
