Very clever viral vid from director Dulcidio Caldeira for MTV Brazil. The balloons are mounted on a track. A cart bearing a camera and a sharp pin starts rolling at one end, filming and popping as it goes. Each balloon has a single frame of the animation hand-drawn on its surface. Looks like they may have stopped it a couple times to clear balloon bits from the lens. [via Dude Craft]

  1. Art looks like the work of Don Hertzfeldt

  2. I wonder if they inflated the balloons before drawing on them. As fast as latex balloons deflate, the first ones would be flat by the time I got them all inked and tied on.

  3. Would this be considered Pop Art?

  4. We can use this idea to make Pop Porn!

  5. A fantastic idea that’s worth all the effort they put into it. (I’m sure Craigslist was full of “Balloon-tying intern needed” jobs.)
The first time I saw this I kept thinking “They need to put a fan under the camera to clear the fragments.” Putting a fan under the camera and pointing it up and away from the lens is a classic way of keeping debris and mist away from the lens. (As well as having an downward angled sheet of plexi in front of the lens to keep stuff from piling in front of it.)

  6. A very neat animation, but I hope they used biodegradable balloons. All those balloon pieces going into the trash makes me shudder.
