Great Global Hackerspace Challenge Update

With up to thirty hackerspaces participating in element14′s Great Global Hackerspace Challenge, it’s hard to summarize all of their work over the past few weeks. However, XinCheJian’s Ricky Ng-Adam’s GGHC Awards does a great job of profiling most of the projects competing in the contest, and even offers unofficial awards like “Best surprise working feature moment” and “Most advanced set of probes.”

If you’re following along, element14 will be announcing the semifinalists this coming Monday, and I’ll be interviewing each for the blog next week. Great work, everybody!

A big thanks to sponsors, judges, and teams. It has truely been a wonderful competition. I can’t wait to see the winners, but I don’t envy the judges – too much awesomeness to pick just 3 semi-finalists.

And Ricky’s list is much appreciated. I highly recommend using it as a jumping off point to check out all the terrific projects.

Element 14 screwed us. After promising lots of rewards, they delivered very very few.
The original $ and some trivial items came through but most of the goods, including major prizes for the semifinalists and winner, have not been delivered.
Today the good folks at AgentSilverFox who managed the event severed all but lawyer connections with Element 14.

Sad day for any future challenges.

than element-14 (a branch of farnell-one) made contract with agent
silverfox to launch a propaganda/promotion competition and invited a
number of hackerspaces to build something with a microcontroller and a
portable powersource that has something to do with education.

the hackerspaces were promised goods for taking part in the competition.
every hackerspace should receive some soldering stations and accessories and a 1-year eagle license for the whole hackerspace.

the winning top-3 teams should receive some shiney oscilloscopes and other goodness.

as of today (some months later) some hackerspaces received some soldering paste and tweezers..
most hackerspaces didnt receive ANYTHING yet.

sanders from silverfox just sent an email to the official mailinglist
stating that agent silverfox has to close the list and will not work
with element-14 any longer.

only after that unexpected and very
frustrating event element-14 is approaching the hackerspaces with the
foul excuse of “we have been working very hard..”

so let that be known.
element-14 screwed with the hackerspace folks.
tell your friends.

has this something to do with the buggy PHP framework they use for their community .. ?!
