At MAKE, we’ve featured our fair share of skid-based projects, but I really like this particularly green pallet project by Fern at Life on the Balcony. She created an excellent and detailed step-by-step guide on how to turn a pallet into a vertical garden. [via Recyclart]

I wouldn’t do this with food crops. Most pallets treated to prevent fungal decay and insect damage with methyl bromide or tribromophenol. Neither are good for you. Tribromophenol can also break down into a compound called TBA. It’s nasty smelling and will taint the vegetables.
Some pallets are heat treated and stamped with HT. Those might be ok, but they may also contain chemicals.
Good advice! One could easily make a pallet or really a thick and strong trellis.

I only have small space in our house for gardening so it’s really amazing idea, I’ve seen in a garden show about the woolly pockets system but using pallet gives a wonderful effect.
