The MTM Snap was designed by Jonathan Ward of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. It costs about $500, runs off an Arduino, is CNCed out of HDPE, and can mill a 5″ x 3″ x 1.75″ area. Design files and BOM are available if you want to make your own. [Via the Arduino blog]

I wonder how well it’d do for PCB milling
Follow the first link and they show it doing precisely (a pun!) that.
Also, I think I would buy one of these. Someone commercialize/make a kit please.
I am counting the days until WowWee or AirHogs or someone starts dumping these for $100 at Best Buy. I’m actually a little surprised it hasn’t happened yet.
Heck, make it $300 and sell it at ToysRUs as a thing that lets your kids make their own toys. It would sell like crazy.
Then ToysRUs wouldn’t sell any toys because you could just make them yourself and you’d have to change the name of the store to “Toys 4 U by U, not Us.”
Why not? The big toy makers have been selling toy making toys for decades…

There is a $300 DIY CNC kit by Zen Toolworks that you can purchase from Amazon and is ready to assemble. Its work area is 7″ x 7″ (not sure about vertical). The kit has been out for quite a while and people seem to be satisfied with theirs. There are some YouTube videos too.

So according to the available plans, the following makes up the bulk of the pricing which is why it is $500 – otherwise it would be like $150 or so?
leadscrew 1/4″-20 2:1 6′ stainless 1 x 123.98
leadscrew nut 1/4″ – 20 2:1 wear compensating 3 x 23.97
Nema 17 stepper motor 3 x 20.95
