My college roommate once told me that the best way to learn to play the guitar is to buy one and figure it out. But as a maker, why buy when you can build? Saga Guitar Kits, available in the Maker Shed, include all the parts and instructions to make your own playable instrument. These affordable kits let you learn the guitar from the inside out while allowing you to personalize it any way you want. High quality materials will ensure your guitar will sound and feel as good or better than something store bought. Build one and share it with us in the MAKE Flickr pool!

I’ve looked at these in the Maker Shed several times, particularily the JB electric bass one.
Alas none of these Saga kits are available to your Canadian customers.
Why are they U.S. only?
To bad they aren’t for lefties
I built one the telecaster style model up a few years ago. The wooden parts were all pretty nice but the rest of the parts had a very cheap feel to them so I replaced pretty much all of them with nicer (but still generally inexpensive) parts. The catch there is that the pre-routed and drilled holes were not quite in line with where parts made for a fender guitar would be mounted so I did have to do a fair amount of filling and re drilling to get everything to fit.
Even considering all that, this kit is cheaper than buying a neck and body form warmoth or similar so I still feel like I made a good purchase. The low cost of those parts made me feel more free to modify the body (I used humbuckers and a 3 switch plate from a Jaguar to add coil tapping and the jag style strangle switch [series capacitor to cut bass]) and now I have a really unique and nice sounding guitar.
Saga are a good place to start, probably the best place to start actually.
