Rachel spotted this cool tutorial from Grathio labs. Illumination is provided by an LED strip, switched on or off by a whisker switch that detects the position of the cover. Mechanically dimmable by the simple act of opening or closing the cover at a wider or narrower angle. [via CRAFT]
I really, really hate it when people destroy books for projects like this, I don’t know why but it makes me feel very uncomfortable.
Well, I share your distaste for the *wholesale* destruction of books,
because of its association with thought control, Farenheit 451, etc.,
etc. But the world is also full of terrible or useless or redundant
books that will do more good as a lamp or a safe, IMHO, than they ever
will for any potential future readers. Outdated public-school science
textbooks, for instance.
