Billed as the “First Ever Animated Tattoo”, Paris area tattoo artist Karl Marc pummeled his friend Marco’s chest for four hours, over a live stream, in order to achieve a working facsimile of a 2D matrix barcode entwined in an artistic floral and cog motif. Yes, it’s a promotion for whisky, but it’s also an interesting take on the classic gag tattoo. I’m sure if Marshall McLuhan were still around he’d give Marc an “A” for effort, since technology is an extension of the human body and this most certainly is a novel case of the medium being the message.
