Do or Diode! RadioShack at World Maker Faire

I can’t believe it was just a week ago today that makers were finishing preparations for the 2nd annual World Maker Faire in NYC. We did our best to cover the event in real-time, using services such as our Posterous-powered Maker Faire Daily (a good read a week later, I might add), but lots of content is still trickling in. Our Weekend Projects sponsor and primary World Maker Faire sponsor, RadioShack, uploaded this video yesterday which shows some of the hands-on activities they had in their tent, and has some proclaiming “RadioShack is back.” What do you think? Did you spend time in the RadioShack booth? Did your kid assemble an electronic snap kit or did you solder yourself an LED flashlight? How was your experience at the Shack’s booth and what did you walk away with?

And if you learned to solder at the Faire, or otherwise got charged up about making, why not spend the weekend on one of our Weekend Projects? We have them available at all skill levels now and will be rolling out new projects over the coming weeks.

The Shack tent was pretty much full when I got there and that was around 10:30 on Saturday. What exactly does it mean when they say “they are back”. There are a number of Radio Shacks around me and one has a number of electronic parts… but I can’t quite get everything I need. If I want a L293D chip I gotta order it (not that I need one but you get my point).

Anyway I saw they were going to start selling Arduinos. That is cool…

  They were seriously about to completely remove their pieces parts bins from all RS. But then they did get to keep their small inventory they have now. There was a bot there for a bit that helped spur that on. But yeah, there for a while, the funny that was going around was almost 100% true. Radio Shack, you have questions, we have cell phones. But in the end they’re saying their back because they got to keep their limited stock of parts, tools and such for making things. Then they added the BS2 kit and they’ve stabilized that bit since then.

  hi denbo, I think what they mean by “we are back” is they’re not only going to continue catering to hobbyists and makers, but they’re actually going to *focus* on us. Product varies from store to store, but like you say some are well stocked. And I’m glad to hear their tent was crowded
