After casting lots for Secret Santa, I drew Makezine.com Editor-in-Chief Gareth Branwyn. Now, those that know Gareth know that he’s a geek’s geek. So, what to give the geek that out-geeks the geeks?

Tricky situation my friends.

So, as a gift to Gareth, I decided to give him the Kisai Keisan Black LED Watch.

A bit of a backstory: In April, I flew from Utah, where I lived at the time, to MAKE headquarters in Sebastopol, California for a job interview. After meeting a lot of the MAKE team, I got to meet Gareth, who was in town from DC where he lives and works. I was really impressed with Gareth’s cool Tokyo Flash watch. I think that adding another geeky watch to his quiver would be a good fit, and something that he would get a kick out of.

Part of what Makes Tokyo Flash watches so cool (aside from the design) is how utterly impossible they are to read. They almost take a degree in Computer Science, Latin, and Klingon to read the time. Below is an example of how the time works on this watch.

For those that like 30 Rock, back in season one, there was a scene with Liz Lemon meeting someone, a geek she had a crush on, in an elevator. He was wearing a “Japanese Pie Watch.”

The Head: I see you’re lookin’ at my watch.

Liz: What?

The Head: It’s cool, isn’t it? That’s a Japanese Pie Watch.

Liz: Oh, OK.

The Head: It tells time with those little pie pieces. Each piece is six minutes, so right now it’s… six times four… 5:30? That can’t be right.

Liz: My watch has these little hands that go around and point at numbers.
