Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool, this clever idea for recycling dead tires (or storing new ones) from Pittsburgh’s Joe Katrincik. It’s two smaller plywood circles for the base, a larger one for the top, 6 castors, 6 screw eyes / eyebolts, and 3 ratcheting tie-down straps. I bet if one were to counter-bore the top holes, a bit, and used T-nuts instead of hex nuts to secure the top eye bolts, one could avoid having the nuts sticking up above the work surface. If one thought it mattered.

Nice idea when you have spare tires you intend to use or seasonal tires. I would never suggest you store old tires around just for this purpose especially inside. There are enough items in the household or garage area that can produce toxic smoke if they catch fire. No sense adding to that list. If they are good tires that you intend to use, then limit the weight that you put on the table. I say this because tires are meant for vertical and lateral support but only while mounted and filled. There is a possibility of damaging their internal belting with too much weight on their sides.
