It’s mostly about isolating the front from the rear, but a large rigid enclosure does definitely help improve the sounds you are trying to reproduce. There are many different types of enclosures that produce different effects. Folks into bass tend to appreciate the ported bass speaker that recreates a Helmholtz resonator.
