In the Maker Shed: ProtoShield for Ardweeny

I like using the Ardweeny for Arduino projects; it’s small, it’s easy to pug into a breadboard, and it’s inexpensive so you don’t mind permanently embedding it. But what if you want to make the Ardweeny compatible with shields? That’s where this ProtoShield for Ardweeny, available in the Maker Shed, comes in handy. It allows you use pretty much any Arduino shield with your Ardweeny. All the pins are broken out “Arduino style” for maximum compatibility and it features a large prototyping area to make a neat little development platform.

All pins on the Ardweeny are brought out to easy to access places

2 on-board LEDs and a button.

Mount shields above or below – after all, you may want the protoboard on the top

Now does that have to be assembled as well? The thing its for also needs to be assembled first. The instructions for it, do not go into much detail.

The FreakLabs HackerMom’s Fred Board (http://www.freaklabsstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=43&products_id=195&zenid=sr8n0foec297aiegscvf7623f4) is also pretty sweet. At about 2x the price ($35) of the ardweeny protoshield, it gives a larger breadboard area, along with a couple extra buttons and leds. I used it recently for prototyping an led control system, but found the solderless breadboard connections were too fragile (wires easily dislodged). My solution for interim prototyping was to use the AdaFruit Proto-Screw Shield on top of the FredBoard. This gave me soldered and screwed connections, as well as a bit of solderless breadboard left over for continued experimentation.
