This “multi-gait soft robot” may be moved by sequentially inflating its various air pockets. Kinda creepy-cool the way it undulates under an obstacle! [Wired Science via b_b]

this must be what gumby’s ancestors looked like when they first emerged from the sea.
That’s so cool! Now how do you make it? Where are the instructions?
here’s how they made this one( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEeaWvgLDrE&list=UU00FsZQU0lzS0LdlpfddDzw&index=8&feature=plcp ) you can also do look up soft robots on youtude for some other info.
The basic idea is you pump air or some other working fluid into a silicone rubber bladder (ecoflec is the name of the silicone they use which can be found in a sample size large enough one or more this size of for $30 us online) if one side of the bladder is thinner that side with expand quicker bending the bladder towards the thicker side.
