Nice quick project if you’ve got a coconut handy. Instructables user marzycielka’s tutorial a good job with the little helpful details, like her trick for removing the coconut meat itself: Skip the chisel. Instead, microwave for 2 minutes, let it cool, and the meat should come out with a spoon. She’s also prepared her own waterproofing finish by mixing linseed and mineral oils, which should be pretty safe for food use as long as she’s using raw linseed oil. See this article at Fine Woodworking for more info on food-safe finishes for wood products.

boiled linseed oil would work fine too…after all it boils signifigantly higher than water…
Boiled linseed oil (blo) isnt simply linseed oil that’s been heated – thats a misnomer. BLO contains metallic driers to help it cure quicker – which is why rags soaked with it it can spontaneously combust. The FWW article referenced points out you should NOT use BLO for food safe finishes. Most linseed oil is BLO since pure linseed oil can take a very long time to cure – which is why it’s typically modified into BLO.
