If you’re shooting a video and would like to get a nice vertical shot without breaking the bank, then try this $25 mini camera crane from OliviaTech. With some aluminum angle, square tube, a quick release mount, and hardware, you can build a portable jib boom to get the right shot. [via DIYP]

  1. If this whets your appetite for more DIY camera / grip gear, there’s a really good book on the subject:

I’ve made about a third of the things in here and used them on film shoots, I highly recommend it.

  2. Neat project, but seems pretty limited without the ability to control some or all of camera pan and tilt on the head. The shots they’re able to take with this are interesting but very limited.

Is there a clever mechanical linkage that would allow that with reasonable cost and build complexity? Or are components to make motorized pan/tilt control with reasonable cost and build complexity?

Very cool! Here is another version I came across with a very detailed tutorial.
